Call us dyed-in-the-silk romantics, but the holidays always evoke nostalgic images of twinkling stars, glittering snow, and shimmering ornaments for us at WinterSilks. Designers remain fascinated with country chic and earth tones. Holiday designs are softer and more laid back."Contrast layering" becomes even more important as it provides warmth & comfort in addition to its up-to-the-minute fashion status. Chic examples are juxtaposing fabrics, such as georgette over velvet; textural layering, such as cable tops with "smooth" skirts; and contrasting silhouettes, such as fuller tops with slimmer skirts. Have you noticed? Your WinterSilks catalog for the most part is photographed "on location" in the great outdoors rather than inside a studio. And as you might guess, this can produce some logistical problems for our Creative Director Wendy, who must select the sites, work around the weather, choose the models, and ultimately interpret what our globetrotting  silk specialists say & feel about each of their creations. It's not a job for the fainthearted. Case in point: snow. Since a holiday catalog has to be photographed months before its distribution, the availability of snow can be problematic. Sure, there's always some snow somewhere. But will it be enough? When the answer is no, Wendy calls in two of her "natural resources", Dieter Sturm and his wife Yvonne, two Wisconsinites who specialize in creating scenic blizzards for Hollywood, with bio-friendly, naturally melting, artificial snow made from whey. Now how cool is that? Whey cool! |

We're canvassing everyone here at WinterSilks about which silk gifts they're buying for whom on their holiday lists and—more importantly—why. Our idea is to share their reasoning with you in an upcoming email. For example, WinterSilks Web assistant Jennifer is giving our  silk angora glove & scarf set to her sister-in-law, who "loves accessorizing" and makes it a point to have a different hat, glove, scarf, or whatever to fit her every mood. | Order early! The substantial insulating powers of all-natural silk might be in even greater demand this winter. The 190 year-old Farmers' Almanac is predicting a particularly cold winter, from the Gulf Coast all the way up to the East Coast, and 20 degrees below normal in the Northern Plains. Should we believe it? Probably. The venerable book—not to be confused with the more eccentric Old Farmer's Almanac—claims historic accuracy of 80 to 85 percent in the ways of weather prognostication, earning it the begrudging respect of mainstream meteorologists, who say the Almanac's predictive formulae, while different from conventional meteorology, aren't entirely without scientific merit.
