make everyday a holly-day!
The wittiest look this
winter? It's all about
intarsia knits! Our artful sweaters are bedecked
with everything from little
ones' mittens to flights of
fancy to patterns of Nordic persuasion. Take our
Cabin embroidered silk
cotton cardigan, for
example. It's the classic
longer length you love, with the charm of a snow-capped hideaway warming up just-worn
skates. Or consider our beautiful Holly Boughs creation, its flattering boat neckline
illuminated by a festive spread of winter flora. These knit picks will add a bit
of whimsy to your winter and are sure to become wardrobe traditions year-after-year!

Silk Abroad: hearty greetings passed
around, then handed down.
The sending of holiday
cards, friendly tokens to
share your best wishes, has been a tradition since the
19th century. Although the thought behind them remains the same, the form of these
greetings has evolved quite a bit since Sir Henry Cole had the first cards made
in 1843 Britain. Sir Cole, having so many kind thoughts to send he couldn't hand-write
them all, had postcards made showing charity to the poor. Around WWI, it became
fashionable to embellish the cards with silk ribbons, lace, and glitter. Among them,
those with silk remain prized collectors items, as the fabric is most likely intact
and still colorful. Lucky for collectors, the charmingly illustrated greetings were
often kept & passed from generation to generation. In fact, we found the one
above in a local antique store, illustrated by none other than Ellen Clapsaddle,
the ‘first lady’ of early 20th century illustration. “Hearty”
holiday greetings, indeed!

Meet the Traveling Roses!
40,000 miles, more than 40 countries,
4 wheels, 1 mother daughter team.
When Rosemary Taugher set out to see the coastlines, she didn't go by route of plane,
train, or automobile. No, Rosemary and her daughter, Chelsea Rose, chose a road
less traveled. This remarkable pair is spending the next 7 or so years completing
a grand tour of the US, Central, and South America on their bicycles, and documenting
the adventure on the duo's website www.travelingroses.com. “We hope to inspire
people to get out & have more fun in every day, and do something they've been
dreaming about doing,” writes Rosemary. And, the ladies have worn their trusty
WinterSilks spunsilk mocks to very fun places. Sailing, bird watching,
at the Mardi Gras parades, at the beach, Rosemary and Chelsea's mocks have shared
in some of their great adventures. “We love the really bright colors... because
we're so limited with what we can carry,” says Rosemary, “and it packs
away to nothing.” Since the team began in June 2007, they've met amazing people
and learned great lessons, the most important of which, says Rosemary, is to never
give up. “Even if you're feeling miserable where you are, you could be on
the verge of something extraordinary.”

From the President:
an appreciation for the little things... and the big ones, too!
When considering the hustle-bustle months we call the “holiday
season,” I think it's important to take a moment or two to reflect on what
we're grateful for. 2009 was a difficult economic year for some, and no one was
shielded from the reality that, as a society, we had shifted a bit when it came
to priorities. However, it's worthwhile to look for the silver lining. One positive
result I've noticed is an increased sense of good, old-fashioned camaraderie. I've
always made it a point to speak with customers weekly, whether across the country
by phone or down the street at our retail store, and I'm incredibly grateful to
all of you who have shared your suggestions, opinions, and feelings with me. We're
staying strong together, and the fact that you've continued to support our business
this way shows me that our customers truly are the best around. Here at WinterSilks
we've always focused on providing the best quality of products at honest prices,
and I promise we'll continue to do just that, year after year. So, this holiday
season, I invite you to take a moment and think of the things you're grateful for.
May the little things bring you joy, may thoughtful gestures warm your hearts, and
may you & yours have a joyous season!
