As astute Silk Quarterly readers you already know silk is unsurpassed in comfort, luxury, and versatility. But, did you know pure silk also is hypoallergenic? In fact, silk can help alleviate symptoms related to seasonal and skin allergies, as well as asthma, making it one of the healthiest choices in clothing. Unlike synthetic fibers, silk naturally resists allergy-causing mold and bacteria, and the structurally smooth fibers hinder silk from picking up pet dander. What’s more, silk is constructed of proteins found biologically in the human body, so it’s a natural choice for sensitive skin. It gives new meaning to the saying “second skin,” no? An added bonus: Almost all of our silk items are machine or hand washable, so there’s no need for costly dry cleaning. Just another reason why silk is a natural companion for fall allergy season and year-round! |

The most sophisticated look for fall is so simple, even a fashion fledgling can excel with ease. Wearable, layered solids are stylish; matching two or more fussy prints is out. Dress up a basic top (or two or three layered) with a pretty fall-hued skirt or silk slacks, dress basics down with cool-weather capri pants or comfy jeans. Of course, you needn’t look any further than WinterSilks for the most luxuriously wearable basics of them all. We know you’ll love our new silk featherweight collection in turtle, crew, or V-necks. They come in beautifully coordinated colors that make getting the layered look a snap! Also, keep an eye out later this fall for our new his & her sized spunsilk cotton tops in a smart knit that creates all-natural stretch (no synthetic fibers here!). Our silk specialists even have created them in two favorite necklines, and our new higher-than-a-crew, lower-than-a-mock “crock” neckline that’s just right for fall and winter. Simply fantastic! |

Why not take a little time this fall to stop and look at the leaves? People in most of Canada and the United States get to witness the splendor of the season’s foliage, Mother Nature’s match to the most vibrant Renoir. Here in Madison, Wis., we have the delight of looking out our windows into the sea of yellow, orange, red, and green maple and oak trees come mid-October. While we don’t have a full-time forester on staff, we consulted some local leaf peepers to find out what our friends here in the Midwest and around the country have to look forward to this fall. Fall foliage tourism has become ever more popular, with leaf peepers most often traveling to the East Coast, Midwest, and Rocky Mountain states. For all regions with deciduous trees, leaves go through the same three “waves” of change: from green to yellow, yellow to orange, and orange to red. When the leaves begin to change is based both on elevation and latitude, with higher areas changing as early as September.
The first leaves to transform for fall will be poplars, birches, aspens, and some maples and hickories. Next, the silver maples and white oaks show their true colors, followed by sumacs, black tupelos, and more oaks. So slow down a little this fall and enjoy nature’s majesty. And, of course, it may get a little chilly, so don’t forget your made-by-nature silk long johns!

For some, an understanding of the natural world and its inhabitants is a trait, for long-time customer Andria it’s a lifestyle. Andria raises and trains horses at her equestrian center in beautiful Southern California, just a hop, skip, and a trot away from areas as diverse as the ocean, mountains, and desert. Being out from dawn to dusk with the more than 50 horses she cares for, Andria tackles the problem of getting dressed for the varying coastal desert temperatures from early spring to late fall with WinterSilks layering pieces. “A horse trainer’s life is in layers,” says Andria, likening her layered lifestyle to an onion. In addition to having trained hundreds of horses and more riders than she can count, Andria works as a resource for teachers with therapeutic riding programs for special needs children. She says even if she weren’t a horse trainer, she’d be working with animals in some capacity. “It’s a connection that I love,” Andria says about working with horses. “I love being able to go into
their world.” |

Ginger Rogers & Fred Astaire. Vivien Leigh & Clark Gabel. Ingrid Bergman & Humphrey Bogart. Our silk specialists must have been feeling particularly nostalgic when designing WinterSilks’ new vintage-inspired sleepwear collection. From peignoirs to dressing gowns, the collection harkens back to old Hollywood romance, with ethereal florals and delicate lace reminiscent of a simpler time.
