Introducing our resolutions for a happy, healthy, silky 2009!
It’s that time of year again, the opportunity for a fresh start, to make a change for the better. While these pledges are sometimes easier said than done, we at WinterSilks did a little self-reflection and came up with resolutions we’ll achieve with the help of silk (it is our passion, after all). We’ve included them in your New Winter 2009 catalogs. Below is a peek… see if you can guess which silk items we’ll employ for each resolution!

Our unending quest to provide you the best rest.
It has been said that sleep is the only healthy thing that everyone enjoys. But what happens when you can’t get the ZZZs you need? (Some of us at WinterSilks can relate, it is one of our resolutions.) We’ve created all-new sleep separates for him & her, in plush, pure spunsilk. They keep you comfortably warm while sleeping, and allow excess heat and moisture to escape so you don’t wake up too hot or cold. Below are a few more tips we’ve found helpful:
- Keep consistent sleeping hours, even on the weekends.
- Don't eat or drink large amounts 2 hours prior to bedtime.
- Avoid caffeine 8 hours prior to bedtime.
- Exercise regularly, but not within 3 hours of bedtime.
Also, we have amazing values available for a limited time during our second annual Silk Sleepwear Sale!

Silk Abroad: The world's most famous face.
She sits in the Louvre, hands gently folded, eyes seemingly following the 6 million visitors she receives every year. The story of her portrait began more than 500 years ago, when Lisa del Gioconda, then thought to be 24, sat for Leonardo da Vinci. Lisa’s husband, a silk merchant, had made his fortune trading in Florence, then a booming textile city. In fact, silk cultivators settled in Italy as early as the 12th Century, and silk played a large role in the advent of the Italian Renaissance. Although it took da Vinci more than 13 years to complete his "Mona Lisa", today the silk merchant’s wife is one of the world’s most recognized figures.

Brick, mortar, and silk!
Nestled on State Street, in the heart of downtown Madison, WI sits our cozy, silk-filled retail store. There, you’re always guaranteed a warm smile, a friendly “hello,” and the very best deals anywhere on overstock and discontinued silk! The store’s energetic manager, Kristine, often has a rack of toasty silk pleasures sitting outside the entrance enticing passers-by to stop & feel the silk. In fact, it was one of these racks that first brought one of our best customers and friends, Diane, into the store about 5 years ago. “Silk feels better against my skin than any other fabric,” says Diane. “I could and would not live without it.” When she’s not honing her culinary skills, Diane enjoys gardening “even in the cold” thanks to her warm silk layers. We think she also may hold the record for most black silk tanks (11). “I wear (one) almost each and every day,” Diane says. In addition to appreciating all the treasures she finds in our little silk shop, “the contacts and relationships” play a role in her patronage as well.

From the President: Pearls, diamonds, and silk! 30 years strong and counting.
This is a very special year for us at WinterSilks. 2009 marks our 30th anniversary providing luxurious silk warmth to wonderful customers across America and beyond. What began as a simple flier selling silk long underwear has turned into America’s #1 source for all types of silk apparel. (Read about how the company started here.) Although the traditional 30th anniversary gifts are pearls and diamonds, as silk experts we’re celebrating with another luxury! As has been the case for 30 years, our dedication to providing the highest quality, best values, and superior customer service still is our #1 priority. In addition, we resolve to continue improving our vast silk offerings by listening to your suggestions and opinions. In fact, it was your suggestions that prompted us to expand our specialty size offerings this spring. It’s been a true pleasure to serve you, here’s to many more years together!

Quarterly Update: Texture is the new pattern.
Great news for those of us dealing with downright bone-chilling temps! Chunky knits are back in a big way, making our ever-popular split neck popcorn sweater an au currant option. Also, cuddly waffles and flattering ribbing are sure-things for the fashion set. Layer these soft textured sweaters over our new camisoles, with lady-like lace and smooth charmeuse for warm, skin-soothing comfort.

As they say... a silk purse from a sow's ear?
The idiom "you can't make a silk purse from a sow’s ear," has always puzzled us here at WinterSilks. While we fully understand starting with the very best materials to make products of superior quality, we were wondering the origin of the saying itself. Turns out, it may be derived from the French word sousier, a cloth coin holder used by peasants. Therefore, you can’t make something as fine as a silk purse from a tattered sousier.
