If you ask us, winter hasn't quite gotten a fair shake. For example, the ancient
Greeks blamed 6 months of cold weather on the trickery of Hades, head of the underworld.
Then again, the Hellenes didn't yet have toasty warm silk to ease the season's wrath.
In our modern world, frosty conditions still cause headaches for many. Heating costs,
for instance, are expected to rise an average of 10% per household this year, according
to the Energy Information Administration. Luckily we can save money turning down
the thermostat 4 or 5 degrees while keeping comfortable with warm silk layers. Below are some additional tips to heat your
hearth economically this winter:

Whether you prefer to spend these cold months curled up with a good book, skiing
the Swiss Alps, or a combination of the two, the versatility of silk layering suits
everyone's needs. So make sure to stock up on silk glove & sock liners, long underwear, and other layering pieces. They're all-natural and energy
efficient!

Roses are red, violets are blue… you know the rest. But how did these heart-warming
little greetings come to be? Valentines were popularized in Europe in the Eighteenth
Century, with close friends and relatives exchanging hand-written notes and trinkets.
We have Ms. Esther A. Howland to thank for our modern idea of the valentine. In
1847 she pioneered commercial valentines, taking inspiration from an English love
note she received. Today the U.S. Greeting Card Association
estimates
about one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide. The perfect accompaniment
to your thoughtful card? Our new Tossed Heart pure silk pajama is sure to be warmly received
on this loveliest of holidays.

The East Coast has many reputations… a highly educated populous, a harmonious
balance of urban and country landscapes, and, you can't forget, its infamous "can't
leave the house for a week" blizzards. To no surprise the area is home to 6 of the
top 10 snowiest places in America (excluding mountainous regions and Alaska). The
great state of Michigan, with its strong lake effect weather, takes care of the
remaining four.

For those living in snowy, cold regions, as well as every area that feels an occasional
chill in the air, we've developed our "Snowflake Guide" to ensure you keep toasty warm no matter the
weather. Look for one, two, or three snowflakes to customize your level of warmth.
The more snowflakes, the more warmth you can expect. And, for the youngsters in
your life, don't forget children's long underwear!

Kari and her Poodle Oliver
|
Keeping her thermometer set at 60 degrees during the winter is a choice both economical
and ecological, writes Kari, a silk-loving customer here in Madison, Wis. A science
writer & editor, Kari knows a thing or two about saving energy and said she's even
considering lowering her house temperature to 55 this year. "Silk long johns make
it all possible," she writes. When she's not inside staying warm in silk, Kari enjoys
taking her standard poodle, Oliver, for walks on brisk winter evenings. Another
benefit to silk? Saving time! "I'm always dressed to go out in the cold," she says,
"(silk's) also comfortable enough to wear at the office all day."

Decoding Interlock:
Interlock is a tricky knit to describe. While our interlock long johns are filament
silk, there’s twice as much of it. Two needles stitch the fabric simultaneously,
so it’s like two layers combined into one! Shop Interlock Silk

Mountain tops in votes!
In last fall’s Silk Quarterly we asked what your favorite image was. The race
was tight amongst the mountain scene, the snowman, and the panda bear. But, after
all the votes were cast & counted, the mountain came out on top! Thanks for
your input!

First of all, I hope 2008 finds you happy, healthy, and cozy. I also hope you get
a chance to have some fun this winter, like I recently did on a sledding excursion
with my family. While many people I know prefer to use this time of year to hibernate
in their warm silk, we decided to put our silk long johns to quite an exciting test,
gliding down (and climbing back up) the great, local snow-covered banks. Literally
a "field" test, my family & I took our sleds to some open land just a short distance
from Madison, Wis., that’s truly a tobogganer’s paradise. Rolling hills
and
soft
powder ensured we had fun for hours, and our toasty spunsilk long underwear provided guaranteed warmth the entire
time. We’d love to hear your silk warmth field testing stories this
winter. We greatly appreciate your ongoing patronage. Oh, and happy sledding!
Warm wishes,

Last Silk Quarterly we asked what your favorite silk items are & why, and we were
excited to get such great responses! For example, Jean, an artist in Arizona, often
travels to galleries and painting events during the cold months. She wrote "My long
johns have been many places when we paint outside in the winter... and I am grateful
for
them every time."
Thanks Jean for sharing your story!
