The art of silk. Wearable works
commissioned for your consideration.

From brush on paper to garment on hanger, the
life of an exclusive
WinterSilks’ print is one of creativity and collaboration,
with a little help from technology. It all begins
with a painting or sketch
by our resident artist, Judy,
who gathers inspiration
from art, nature, and pretty much everywhere she goes. She then takes her creation
and scans it into her
computer, which prints out
a digital rendering of her original work that gets sent
to our design center. For
any given season, Judy
will design dozens of
exclusive prints to adorn sleepwear, sweaters,
blouses, skirts, tees, and
other items. A couple
favorites from our latest collection are her new
Mosaic Tile caftan and
pajama set and the Garden Grove printed sweater (complete with rosette
buttons). And, since most
prints run in limited-edition, you’ll have your very own silky work of wearable art!

Dressing natural is cool,
and the United Nations agrees!

Dressing natural is cool
What’s the best part about wearing silk in the spring
and summertime? You
feel fresh and comfortable without compromising your
style. Silk’s molecular
structure naturally allows
air to pass through, making
it the breeziest, healthiest
fabric under the sun. Silk also plays
well with others, case-in-point: our silk cotton
blouses
. They’re light and airy with the
crispness of cotton. These blouses are a
great way to celebrate the “International
Year of Natural Fibers” (which the UN Food
and Agriculture Organization declared
2009 to be.) According to the FAO, natural
fabrics are of utmost importance to the world economy, helping provide food and income
security to almost every region of the world.
So silk is doing its part in the global economy—
as well as being a natural fiber ambassador
in your summer wardrobe!

Quarterly Update:
Mix, match, and always look your best.

Quarterly Update: mix, match
How simple can creating
your ideal summer
wardrobe get? How about 1 incredible fabric, 4 mix-and-match pieces in all coordinating colors? Our newest travel-perfect knit, silk viscose with spandex, will pack without a single wrinkle (and that goes for a full-day’s wear as well). Plus, it has the
most fluid drape that flatters every figure, and it’s completely light and breathable. The tunic,
tank, skirt, and pant
will all integrate into your current wardrobe as well to create endless dressing options.
So you’ll go from day to
night, from work to play,
and from sea to shining sea beautifully, comfortably, and easily!

Silk Abroad: Sweetest sounding strings.
Silk Abroad: Sweetest sounding strings
The soft, resonating sound
of the harp has been an orchestral staple in Europe since the Middle Ages, its popularity continued during
the Baroque period. And
what material helped
make the emotionally charged music of Bach and Handel come alive? The
gentle vibration of silk harp strings. Baroque harps, as well as those in Persia and Burma, employed
the labor-intense strings, which are made by
hand-twisting the silk base then hand-twisting
metal around it, a process that can take months to complete. The result of which is a lighter, more delicate hum than metal alone. Turns out silk
sounds as smooth as it feels!

"April hath put a spirit of youth in everything."
- William Shakespeare

From the President:
New look, cool innovations!

Greetings readers and happy spring! I’ve always thought of spring as the season to renew and redo, hence our new Silk Quarterly format. I hope that you enjoy receiving the compact version in your e-mail inbox, and, as always, finding the full version on our website. We’ve been very busy the past couple of months creating new fabrics (like our without-a-wrinkle silk viscose with spandex) as well as expanding our spring and summer collections to offer more new products than ever before! We focused, in particular, on a couple of collections you’ve written that you’d like to see more of. The first: our ‘no sweat’ silk activewear. We’ve added about a dozen styles, most of which come in both ladies’ and women’s sizing. Also, be sure to see our amazingly comfortable men’s tees that I, for one, will be seen in all spring and summer long. Also, keep an eye out this July for even more new styles for him, great new accessories and blouses for her, and new exclusive prints for everyone. As Silk Quarterly readers, you’re the first to know!

All the best,
Jeff Baudhuin, WinterSilks President

A life-long love of silk!
We recently received an e-mail from a wonderful customer in Florida. Rita explained to us how she first discovered silk at age 3, via her grandfather’s silk lamp shade factory. As she got older she would “explore the huge pantries of bolts of silk, every texture and weight.” By age 13 Rita was trying her hand at silk Batik dying by dripping candle wax on a small silk scrap then painting it with ink. Because of silk’s porous structure, it takes brilliant colors easily. Now the full-time artist has her own studio and has even dyed some WinterSilks robes and long johns sets. “I doubt I will ever recover from being a ‘silk-aholic’,” she writes, “but for now it is a great love!”

At least they’re no longer
called detachable bosoms…

Silk dickeys
When we set out to become America’s premiere source of silk apparel, never did we think we’d hold the title of America’s #1 seller of silk dickeys. But, so it went. Our dickeys offer the perfect amount of coverage for year-round comfort, and they’re much more comfortable than those of the old days. Dickeys originally came into fashion in the US in the late 1800s as false shirt-fronts, marketed as “detachable bosoms,” to be worn under tuxedos, and were made of plastic. (Bonus points if you remember the Bugs Bunny cartoon with the rolled up dickey.) While the plastic dickeys were waterproof and stain-resistant, they left much to be desired in terms of comfort. Not only are our 100% silk dickeys machine washable and luxuriously comfy, we’re offering additional savings on them. For a limited time when you buy any 2 or more, you’ll save $2 on each, no limit!
